1. Heartland
Based on the novel series by Lauren Brooke, Heartland is the longest-running drama series in Canada. This drama follows Amy Fleming, a teenager that has a special connection with horses. Amy and her family live on Heartland ranch in Alberta, Canada. Amy uses her gift to help horses that may not recieve help from anyone else. I am a huge Heartland fan and this is a great show for the whole family.
2. Walk. Ride. Rodeo.
This movie is based on the true story of Amberley Snyder, a professional barrel racer and motivational speaker. After being in a car accident, Amberley is left paralyzed and therefore does not know what her future will hold. Amberely continued to follow her dreams and started riding horses again just 4 months after the accident. Amberley continues to inspire everyone by sharing her story and shows you that nothing is impossible. You can watch Walk Ride Rodeo on Netflix.
3. Free Rein
Free Rein is a Netflix original series and it follows Zoe, a 15-year old American. Zoe spends the summer on an island in the United Kingdom and where her mother grew up. Zoe meets a wild horse that only she has a special connection with. Zoe makes new friends and has adventures on the island. This is a great series for teenagers.
4. The Black Stallion
The Black Stallion movie is a horse-lovers favorite. Based on a children's novel by Walter Farley, this movie is about an Arabian stallion that is brought on a ship that a young boy is on. The young boy is mesmerized with the stallion. The ship sinks and only the boy and stallion survive. After being stranded on an island, both the boy and stallion are rescued to return home. The boy meets a trainer that helps him and the stallion race against some of the fastest horses in the world.
5. Spirit Riding Free
This popular kids show on Netflix was created based on the original movie Spirit. This cartoon series follows three girls- Lucky, Abigail, and Pru. They have many adventures with their horses and learn the power of teamwork and friendship. There was also a movie called "Spirit Untamed".
6. Secretariat
This family movie is based on the story of Secretariat but not everything in the movie is true as to what happened in real life. In the movie, Penny Chenery starts managing the family-owned Thoroughbred farm after her father is sick. She has to steer her way through the world of horse racing that is dominated by males. Her and a veteran trainer raises a gifted colt that ends up crossing the finish line as a Triple Crown Winner.
7. Riding Faith
After her father's death, Grace and her mother struggle to keep their family ranch. Grace struggles to move on after the death of her father, but finds peace and happiness through a majestic horse. With the help of their friends and the magical white horse, they make a plan to have enough money to save the ranch. This is a great family-friendly movie on Netflix.
8. Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron
The original movie, Spirit was one of my favorite childhood movies. I would watch it over and over, and never get tired of it! The movie shows you the journey of a wild stallion, Spirit trying to remain free with his herd. Spirit is captured and people attempt to train and tame him. Throughout the training, Spirit refuses to be tamed and has hope to get back to his herd.
9. Flicka
In Wyoming, Katy McLaughlin has the hope to work on her father's ranch and eventually taking it over one day. Katy tames a mustang and names her Flicka. She has a strong bond with Flicka and both are more alike than Katy had thought. Katy's father sells Flicka, leading Katy to enter a dangerous race to win Flicka back.
10. Racing Stripes
Even though this is a movie about a zebra, it is another favorite of mine. After being seperated from the circus a baby zebra is found by a horse trainer and his daughter. His daughter, Channing names the zebra Stripes and has the goal to race him and follow in her mother's footsteps of being a jockey.
