Organization is a simple practice, yet we seem to fail at staying organized. Horses require a lot of care and it can be easy to forget something in our horse’s routine. There is an easy way you can keep up with hoof trimmings, deworming, vet appointments, and anything else you may have scheduled. Let me share with you how I keep my horse organized.
Calendars
Using a paper calendar may seem old school, but I like to keep all of my horse’s activities written down on a calendar. I have a calendar for myself, but my horse has her own calendar with only her activities. I like to keep a real paper calendar just in case something happens to my phone, that way I won’t lose everything.
I keep things written down such as farrier appointments, deworming, when I ride and how long I ride, and even when my horse is bathed. Keeping things like this written down helps me keep track of when I need to do a certain activity again so I won’t forget.
If you aren’t the paper and pencil type, then you can use the calendar on your phone or tablet. I also like to set reminders on the reminders app for when my horse needs to be dewormed or a scheduled time for a farrier appointment.
Apps
With technology these days, there are apps for everything! I have tried out a few different equestrian apps and they can come in handy. I first started out using Equus Note- The Horse Journal app. I loved this app, it was a digital diary and calendar for anything you did with your horse.
You could personalize it and add your horse’s photo. After updating my device, the Equus Note app wouldn’t work. I then had to look for a different app that was similar. I tried out The Equestrian App. This app has a variety of options for what you can do. It includes weather, stable management, journal and calendar, contacts, and even managing documents.
I liked this app, but it wasn’t what I was used to, I was used to something more simple.
I continued to look at different equestrian apps and one I could use for free. The last two apps I mentioned were free but had upgrade options you could purchase. I then discovered an app called Ridely. Ridely is a beautifully made app for equestrians. It gives you a calendar, training programs, riding exercises, and more. It is customizable and lets you add your horse’s photo. I love the calendar on Ridely because it is so similar to the Equus Note app I had before.
Ridely is free, but also has an upgrade option to Ridely Pro. I am satisfied with the free option, it gives me everything I need for keeping my horse organized. The calendar gives you category options so you can separate activities- personal activities or horse activities. There are options when you create an activity, you can categorize it as a riding activity, veterinarian, farrier, and more.
Overall, my top choice for an equestrian app is Ridely. I love keeping a calendar there just for my horse, so if I don’t have my real calendar with me, I can still look to see when I did something with my horse.
Routine
My horse has a routine schedule. Horses love routine and I like to stick to it. My horse gets fed around the same time every day. I have been late at supper time before, and boy did I know it! I have even fed my horse a little early since I wouldn’t be home at feeding time. When I came back home, my horse stood at her bowl like I hadn’t even fed her (even though I already did before I left). I learned not to mess with her routine! Keeping your horse on a schedule and routine makes everything more organized and keeps your horse happy and healthy.
Staying Consistent
To succeed in organizing, you must stay consistent and make it a priority. Every time I do something with my horse like bathe her, I come into the house and write it down on her calendar and put it on my phone. Keeping my horse’s activities in two places is very convenient for me. Keeping my horse’s health and well-being organized has never been more simple. You just have to stay consistent and write it down.
