Business Spotlight: FitEq

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Founded by Lauren Mahr, FitEq is changing the way people view equestrian fashion and fitness. Lauren was inspired to start her own business that began with workout programs and accessories. She began to realize that she preferred at-home workouts rather than going to the gym. The business began to grow with a line of apparel options and accessories for your horse.

Just recently, products by FitEq became available at many retailers including The Tack Shop of Lexington, Everleigh Collection, The Tack Shoppe, and more. This fall new products were released such as the crewneck sweater, long sleeve seamless schooling top, the Tech Hat, and a few more.

I asked Lauren a few questions to learn the story behind the business and what is in store for the future of FitEq.

Q: When did you start your small business and what inspired you to do so?

A: “The FitEq apparel line launched last spring, but we have yet to launch our main collection. We have some staple pieces and accessories now, but our show shirts and breeches will be the bread and butter of our line. I was really inspired by European equestrian style. I love the femineity of the French and Italian brands, but some of their pieces aren’t practical for American riders, especially those who ride in hunter or equitation divisions. Our goal is to create unique and interesting styles that are still appropriate in the show ring.”

Q: What advice would you give young entrepreneurs that might want to start their own equine-related business?

A: “Definitely be patient and take things slow. I tend to rush and get ahead of myself, and I wish that someone had told me to slow down and be a little more patient. I think it’s also important to find a mentor or a friend who is also an entrepreneur. It can be lonely and frustrating to start a business on your own and having someone to talk to can help a lot."

Q: What is the goal for the FitEq?

A: “Our goal is to change the way American riders view equestrian fashion. For so long we’ve all worn the same styles from the same brands, and I think a lot of us can be scared to try new things. We want our customers to feel like they can express their sense of style in the show ring and stand out without seeming “flashy”. It’s a fine line of balance, but I think when you see our new collection, you’ll get it!”

Q: We see that some new and exciting products will be launching soon, any hints?

A: “Yes absolutely! Our new show shirts launch early 2023 just in time for the winter circuits. Our breeches will follow shortly after in the spring as well. We are so excited that this new line is being made in the U.S. from the finest materials. Domestic manufacturing is not easy, but it will be well worth it!”

Q: Will apparel continue to be the main focus for The FitEq, or are other products in store for the future?

A: “Yes, apparel is definitely our main focus. We plan to expand into more knitwear and outerwear in the future, as well as a more robust competition wear line."
