It's that time of the year, ticks are everywhere and you need to protect your horse from them. Ticks can transmit diseases to your horse such as Lyme disease and equine piroplasmosis. Depending on where you live, ticks can be worse in different climates and locations. If you live in an area where ticks are more common, it is important to prevent them from being on your horse.
Method 1: Fly Spray
Using a highly effective fly spray that protects your horse against ticks is very important. My favorite fly spray for this is Absorbine Ultrashield EX. When looking at fly sprays, make sure that it protects your horse from ticks. If you are trying a new fly spray, use it in a small area on your horse to test it and make sure your horse doesn't have an allergic reaction to it. A spray that has Permethrin is most likely going to prevent ticks, as this ingredient best repels ticks.
Method 2: Check your horse
Checking your horse daily and making sure there are no ticks on your horse is a great and easy way to prevent problems such as Lyme disease. If you find a tick on your horse, remove it immediately.
Method 3: Mow your pasture
Ticks love tall grass, and that makes it easy for them to climb up your horse's legs. By keeping your pasture mowed, this can easily prevent them from getting on your horse.
By taking action and doing these simple steps, you will decrease the chance of ticks being on your horse.
