We can all agree that a horse halter is the most important and basic piece of tack you need when having a horse. There are many halter styles and there are so many to choose from. Let’s look at the types of halters and their uses.
Nylon Halter
The most common type of halter used by horse owners is the nylon halter. Nylon halters are very affordable and come in many color options. The downside to nylon halters is that they can be harder to clean.
Rope Halter
You often see the rope halter being used by western riders. The rope halter can come in a variety of options. You can choose how many knots you want on the noseband, the more knots there are, the more control you can have with your horse. Rope halters are simple, lightweight, and come in many color options.
Leather Halter
The traditional leather halter gives a clean and polished look. Leather halters are very common in the English world and they can be customized to have your horse’s name put on a plate on the halter. Leather halters are more costly compared to nylon and rope halters, but can last a long time with the correct care.
Breakaway Halter
Breakaway halters are used for horses out in the pasture. If you want to leave a halter on your horse while in the pasture then a breakaway halter is for you. Breakaway halters are made of nylon, but feature a leather crown piece which is the “breakaway” part.
