Types of Bits

Updated: Jan 9

If you ever have been in a tack store, you most likely seen a large variety of bits. With so many bits out on the market, it's hard to determine which bit is right for your horse... or even if your horse needs one at all! Let's talk about some of the types of bits used by horse owners.

Snaffle Bit

The snaffle bit is by far the most common bit around. It is used for either the western or english discipline. Snaffle bits are known to be less harsh on the horses' mouth, but can be harsh if it is manufactured with twisted wire. When the rider is pulling on the reins, the pressure is applied to the bars of the mouth. A snaffle bit could be a good option for you if you have a horse that needs some direction and a little more control.

Hackamore

A hackamore is a good option for a horse that has issues in its mouth and cannot tolerate a bit. A hackamore is similar to a halter but puts pressure on the face instead of in the mouth. When using a hackamore, be cautious because it could cause damage to the horses' face. A lot of barrel racers tend to use a hackamore rather than another type of bit.
