Giving your horse a full bath can be time consuming, and there may be a day that you just want to wash the tail without getting the water hose out. There is an easy and simple way to do it, without a water hose!
I prefer to wash my horse's tail every few weeks to help promote hair growth and have a healthier and cleaner tail overall.
Step 1: Get a bucket, and have someone hold your horse!
Have someone hold your horse for you, or tie your horse up before starting this process. The first step to washing your horse's tail is to fill up a bucket with water. You can use a 5-gallon bucket for this, or a lighter option would be a 8-quart bucket. After filling the bucket with water, hold it up behind your horse and put the tail inside. This helps get the tail wet and get some dirt off the tail. When standing behind your horse, it is important to be cautious and let your horse know you are behind them.
Step 2: Grab your favorite shampoo
After you have gotten your horse's tail wet, you can now grab your shampoo. I prefer to use something natural on my horse, and one of my favorite shampoos is the SILK Pro Natural Whitening and Brightening Shampoo by Espana Silk. Apply some shampoo on the tail and start scrubbing!
Step 3: Rinse
Now that you have used the shampoo and scrubbed the tail, now its time to rinse. Have another bucket of clean water to rinse the tail with. As you did in step 1, hold the bucket behind your horse and put the tail inside. Use the clean water in your bucket to rinse the tail and ensure that all the soap is out.
All done! After you have rinsed the tail, your horse has a clean tail! These simple and easy steps are great if you do not have access to a water hose, or if you just want to wash the tail and not the whole body. You can now let the tail dry, and braid it if you wish.
Step 4: After Wash Care
After washing my horse's tail, I like to help that clean tail last as long as possible without having to wash the tail in another week. For a long-lasting conditioned tail, I apply Espana Silk SILK Natural Protein Conditioner when the tail is wet. Once the tail dries, I apply the SILK Natural Protein Detangler/Full Body Sheen/Protectant Spray with Sunscreen to help eliminate tangles and protect the tail from dirt and debris.
After I apply the condioner and detangler, I braid the tail and put it in the Biomane tail bag. Using a tail bag helps protect the tail from dirt, debris, and hair breakage. I have found that using a tail bag helps keep the tail cleaner for a longer period of time, rather than not keeping it in a tail bag. Doing all of this will help promote tail growth and have a beautiful looking tail.
